Welcome to Samma Karuna!

This manual contains the important information for karma yogis. Please read it carefully and ask your Karma Yoga leader or look up at your knowledge base if you have any further questions.
“I am who I am thanks to you; you are who you are thanks to me.”
Ishi May you be happy!
Introduction to Samma Karuna
Samma Karuna in the Pali language means “the right compassion”. This means compassion in action; not only developing qualities of compassion in ourselves but also incorporating them in our daily lives.
Samma Karuna is an “Awakening and Healing” school. Without being dogmatic, blindly following tradition or masters or worshipping gods, it aims at offering help, inspiration and support in one’s life path. Samma Karuna puts the heart at the center. It supports us to love, kindness, compassion and a joy of life.
Samma Karuna offers the following programs and courses:
● Awakening and Healing Program runs continuously for four weeks at a time
● Tantra and Breathwork Teacher Training 3 times per year for 4 weeks ( once in Greece, twice in Thailand)
● Yoga Teacher Training Courses 200hr & 500hr Yoga Alliance certified that normally runs every other month
● Various short courses and workshops that run during the year such as the Bio Development Teacher Training, Yoga Therapy courses, Nutrition and Ayurveda Principles, and Reiki workshops.
The core offering of the school and the program that you will be taking is the Awakening and Healing Program.
Awakening and Healing Program
The principles upon which Samma Karuna is based are clearly reflected in the Awakening and Healing Program. This program includes a range of activities that offer students tools they might find useful in their daily lives, in their pursuit of a happier and more fulfilled life.
The Awakening and Healing Program is four weeks long where each week with a different theme:
Week 1: (Earth element) – Coming back to your body, working strong to bring back our awareness from the mind to the body and the sensations in the body.
Week 2: (Water element) – Alowing yourself to feel and embrace any sensation or emotion. Understanding that we cannot transform what we cannot perceive.
Week 3: (Fire element) –Working with more sensitive and subtle aspects of your being. Dividing in order to help us to observe with clarity and equanimity.
Week 4: (Air element) – Working on the quality of watching any sensations or emotions without getting lost in them, without clinging or rejection. Reconnect with the joy of living and to celebrate life, allowing conditioning to fade.
This structure does not mean that you have to join the program at week 1. In fact, you can join the program at any point. The most important thing is that you commit for a whole month.

This is a still meditation. Considered to be the meditation used by Gautama Buddha to get enlightened. All levels and practices are welcome.
Yoga Practice
Samma Karuna’s yoga is gentle, spiritual and therapeutic. Suitable both for beginners and experienced practitioners. It incorporates the basis of Hatha Yoga with Vinyasa flow and mindful Ujjayi pranayama, allowing the whole process of practice to heal and to become mindful.
Tantra Practice
Formal Tantra practice of Samma Karuna help us to open our heart and connect us in a more intimate and meaningful way with ourselves and others.
Inner-dance
The innerdance is an intuitive and organic state of expanded consciousness that acts as a gateway or portal towards wholeness and a deeper understanding of who and what we are. Music is used to support the activation of specific brainwave patterns that stimulate a waking dream-like state of lucid consciousness.
Self-inquiry
Self-inquiry is a practice developed by Byron Katie. It involves asking four simple questions about each belief that causes us pain: 1. Is it true? 2. Can you absolutely know that it’s true? 3. How do you react when you believe that thought? 4. Who would you be without the thought? The work is a way to first identify and then question the thoughts that cause you stress. Through self-inquiry a different, less known capacity of the mind can end this suffering.
Kind Awareness Explorations
This carefully designed journey starts with nervous system regulation techniques and grounding practices to help you feel safer in your body; from this you will be guided into awareness of the emotions you store and how to release them; next are partner practices, to experience authentic connections with others and also find and release your blocks to connection. The emotional release is then deepened through Buddhist meditations on Grounding and Love.

The day off during the first weeks is Monday.
Sundays are general cleaning day.
At the weekend, the Karma Yoga Leader sends out a Google sheet in which you can assign yourself to your preferred shift for that week.
Be informed about your upcoming shifts. It is your responsibility to find out when you are assigned to work. It might help if you take a picture of the schedule so that you always have it with you.
Karma Yoga Work
When starting your shift, go to the Info Point check your tasks for the day. Discuss with the other Karma Yogis on your shift who is responsible for which task. Give each other a hug
General guidelines on your shift:
- Your priority is to check students in and out of classes in the program; make sure that each participant is wearing a wristband or has a receipt that proves they have paid for the class
- When you work, always be aware of your surroundings. Only whisper if you need to talk during the morning meditation, and generally work in a state of mindfulness. • If a teacher is late for class (even a minute past the starting time) contact immediately the Welcome Center by Walkie Talkie or just going there. • Bring abandoned personal items to the Welcome Centre where they will be placed in the lost & found box.
- We all make Samma Karuna beautiful so, anytime you are here, keep an eye out for anything that may need doing.
- If something is missing, broken, or almost out of stock, let the Karma Yoga leader know.
- Turn off fans and lights that have been left on in halls that are not being used.
- Report any issues to the Karma Yoga leader or at the Welcome Center.
If you or someone else gets hurt while at Samma Karuna, notify the Welcome Centre right away. If necessary, they can arrange for medical care For minor cuts and scrapes, there is a first aid kit in the Welcome Centre. We encourage you to have a health insurance during your period in the school.
Preparing the Halls for Class
When you start preparing a hall for a class, bring the folder from the info point with the name of the hall in which the class will take place. Bring a sign in sheet and a pen as well.
Prepare each hall to be ready at least 15 minutes before the class starting time, when students may start to enter. Generally, for the outdoor halls, this includes sweeping the floor, lighting mosquito coils and turning on the lights and fans and checking if there is sufficient mosquito repellent in each hall.
Below you can find an overview of the different setups for each class.

AS STUDENTS ARRIVE
● Allow students to enter the hall 10 minutes before the class start time. If the teacher is already present at the hall ask the teacher.
● Welcome every student by standing outside the entrance of the hall (not inside hall nor next to the hall)
● Unless it is a free class, make sure every student has a pass for the class or is wearing on their wrist or ankle a band in the correct color for the week. If they do not, politely ask them to go to the Welcome Centre to get one before participating in the class.
No student should be allowed in class (that is not free) without a pass or not wearing a band of the right color.
● Ask every student for their name and legibly write it on the sign in sheet.
● For yoga classes, make sure to place the mats in such way to maximize the capacity of the hall. If it is 5 minutes before the class is scheduled to start and the teacher has not yet arrived, notify the Welcome Centre so that they either can contact the teacher or send a replacement.
● Before class starts, as a gesture of kindness ask the teacher if he or she needs anything.
● If you are in the Awakening Hall and the air conditioning is on, ensure that the door is closed.
ONCE CLASS HAS STARTED
● Wait outside the hall for extra 10 minutes in case students arrive late.
o If the class is in the Awakening Hall and the teacher has closed the door and curtain, do not let late students enter.
o For all other halls or if the door and curtain of the Awakening Hall is still open, ask the teacher before letting in late students to ensure that they will not disrupt the class.
AFTER THE CLASS IS FINISHED
● After the class ends, you can do the following:
o Tidy the hall and put everything in place as per the laminated hall check sheet.
o Turn off the fans and lights. To turn off lights and fans in the Awakening Hall, pull the keycard up next to the door and move it sideways, so after about a minute the power in the hall will go off. Take the used masks to the housekeeping next to the Awakening Hall, and bring back the clean ones.
Work as meditation
During this part you are expected to perform tasks from the daily tasks list. Most of the time they will include raking, sweeping, taking the trash out etc. When you’ve finished raking bring the black bags with leaves to the following place:
This is where we dispose of rubbish:

Weekend Cleaning
Every weekend we have a deep cleaning routine. Below are the tasks that need to be done. Always refer to the task list to see which task must be completed during your shift. Here is what needs to be done: (refer to the tasklist).
Yoga mats
Wash yoga mats over the little wooden bridge in front of the toilet area so that the water can flow down to the ‘river’. You will need a bucket with water and soap (both found in the tools area), the long brush (found at the same place) and the hose that is on the left
side of the toilets. Scrub them well on both sides, rinse them, shake off the water to minimize the drying time, and hang them to dry. After they are completely dry, roll them up and put them back in the halls. Be conscious of the water you use to rinse the mats – there is a shortage on the island.
Yoga blocks
Prepare a bucket of water with soap. Wash them thoroughly with a sponge, and let them dry afterwards in the Buddha Hall.
Replacing sponges
All sponges that we use to clean the mats throughout the week will be replaced. You can get the new ones at the storage area behind the Buddha Hall. Dispose the old, broken ones in the bin, and bring those in a good state to housekeeping to be washed.
Spray bottles
Refill the plastic spray bottles that students use to clean their mats after class. ● 1 teaspoon of white vinegar from the area between Buddha hall and the tool shed
● 2 drops of tea tree oil from the Welcome Centre. Please return it to them. ● Water to fill the bottle
Cabinets and coils
The shelves in the cabinets in each hall should be emptied, and thoroughly cleaned with a damp cloth. To clean the coil holders, dispose the ash in the general waste bin. Finally check if there are enough tissues in each hall.
The blackboard
Deep clean the blackboard with a bucket of water and soap and a sponge, so it looks nice and clean.
Shifts after 8:00pm
Bonfire shift
During the bonfire shift you are expected to put the chairs around the bonfire and spread three bamboo mats with some cushions from Osho hall. Also, your task is to start the bonfire at around 20.30 and stay till the end. Make sure the fire is out and take mats back to the info point, cushions to Osho and collect all the rubbish.
Movie/Games night
During this shift you are expected to clean up the restaurant area and arrange the chairs and tables so that the participants can enjoy themselves. Make sure to put everything in order when the shift finishes.
Free Hugs Campaign
For the free hugs campaign you will need:
● A Free Hugs T-shirt
● Copies of the current calendar
● Samma Karuna leaflets
● A few free classes pass
● Balloons
● Smiles!
Go to the area indicated by the Karma Yoga Leader, stay with the group and spread love.
Offer information about the school (such as its activities, location, membership options, and karma yoga opportunities) to those who are interested and also mindfully offer free passes to those people who express an interest in our work, especially if they have never been to our school before.
The free hugs campaign is primarily a process of offering love and affection to bring joy to someone’s day, without expecting anything in return, and this is how it should be experienced. At the end of your shift, return to the school and give your Free Hugs T shirt to the Karma Yoga Leader.
Rules for Karma Yogis
The following rules for karma yogis are to create harmonious and loving energy between all members of the Samma Karuna community.
All rules are important but some have more serious consequences if they are broken.
Karma yogis who break any of the following rules will be removed immediately from the Karma Yoga Program:
- Be on time for your shift. If you cannot fulfill your scheduled shift, you must inform the volunteers leader as soon as possible so that a replacement or some other solution can be found. This should be done in person or by calling the him, not by sending a message or email.
- For the duration of your shift, unless you are on your approved break, you are expected to occupy yourself only with karma yoga tasks. Any other activity outside your tasks is not allowed
- Do not discuss or argue about work-related issues in front of students or visitors. • If you wish to use a hall for personal reasons, get a manager’s authorization first.
- Do not obtain/use any Samma Karuna property or copy any material like music, documents, etc. without authorization.
- Do not leave your shift without authorization from the Karma Yoga Leader.
- Be respectful to others; especially members of the Thai Community. For example, do not shout or swear.
- Do not take things, including food, without authorization.
If a karma yogi breaks any of the following rules,
First time: Karma yogi gets an official warning from the group leader Second time: Karma yogi cannot take classes for three days
Third time: Karma yogi will be removed from the Karma Yoga Program. • Access to the restaurant’s kitchen is prohibited at all times. - Do not encourage others to attend events outside the school during the times that the Awakening and Healing Program runs.
- Maintain noble silence at Samma Karuna from 10:30 p.m. until 8 a.m.. Especially if you are working, if you need to talk to someone during the Vipassana meditation, whisper or do so in the Welcome Centre.
Other rules for Karma Yogis - Follow the Samma Karuna Values and Rules and encourage students to follow them as well.
- Your karma yoga experience at Samma Karuna is for four consecutive weeks. You can ask for up to four days off during your karma yoga to go for a visa run or if you are sick (providing a doctor’s certificate), but if you exceed this period you may lose your status as a karma yogi and need to come back another time.
- Only Welcome Centre staff are responsible for money transactions. You must not accept money on behalf of Samma Karuna.
- The poster boards are only meant to be used for activities and workshops run by the school.
- Smoking and drinking is strictly prohibited on all the school’s premises. If you see someone smoking or drinking, kindly inform them of the rule and ask them to either stop or leave the school.
Recommendations - Beware of the dogs. Do not pet any dog you see on the campus for the first time. They can be aggressive, even biting, especially with people they don’t recognize. Also, when you see a dog entering a hall, regardless of whether there is a class on or not, try to get it out, for example by using one of the spray bottles. Never pet a dogs inside a halls. They need to understand that the hall is NOT a space for them as their presence is disruptive for classes.
- You are strongly encouraged to take as many precautions as possible against mosquito bites. Depending on the time of year, there can be several cases of dengue fever on the island. Use mosquito repellent containing deet (the only effective ingredient) at least twice daily, at around 7 am and 4 pm, which are the mosquito peak times; but also in between, especially if you sweat, go swimming, or take a shower. Other precautions are wearing clothes that cover your whole body, and using a mosquito net around your bed and over your windows.
- Renting a motorbike is popular on the island. They can be dangerous, though, as most roads are badly constructed and many people drive carelessly. Only rent a
motorbike if you’re an experienced driver, always drive mindfully and slowly and always wear a helmet. - Consider buying a Thai SIM card. They are inexpensive, they can be found in any convenience store chain (all you need is your passport) and having a Thai number can be helpful in an emergency. As soon as you get a number, please give it to the Karma Yoga Leader.
Dengue Prevention Protocol
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause mild to severe flu-like symptoms. It is important to be aware of the early signs and symptoms and take prompt action if you suspect that you or someone else may have dengue. This protocol aims to provide guidance on how to act in the event of a suspected dengue case during the retreat. Early detection and appropriate treatment are crucial for a positive outcome.
I. Early Stage and Common Symptoms of Dengue:
- Incubation Period: The incubation period for dengue is typically 4 to 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
- Common Symptoms:
- High fever (often sudden onset)
- Severe headache
- Pain behind the eyes
- Joint and muscle pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue and weakness
- Skin rash (may appear around 2 to 5 days after fever starts)
- Mild bleeding (e.g., nosebleeds, gum bleeding)
II. Immediate Actions if Dengue Symptoms Appear:
- Self-Assessment: If you or someone else experiences any of the common dengue symptoms mentioned above, immediately notify the retreat staff or the designated person in charge of health matters.
- Rest and Isolation: The affected person should rest and avoid contact with others to prevent potential transmission to other retreat participants.
- Hydration: Encourage the person to drink plenty of fluids, such as water, oral rehydration solutions, or fresh juices, to stay hydrated.
III. Testing and Treatment: - Testing: It is essential to take a dengue test as soon as symptoms appear. The retreat staff will help getting the person to the nearest healthcare facility for testing. The most common test is a blood test, which can detect the presence of the dengue virus or antibodies.
- Treatment within Samma Karuna: If the dengue test is positive, the retreat staff will ensure that the individual receives adequate rest, hydration, and symptomatic treatment (e.g., acetaminophen) to manage fever and pain.
- Transfer to Hospital: In cases of severe dengue symptoms (e.g., severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding), immediate transfer to the nearest hospital with proper medical facilities is crucial.
- Samma Karuna staff will assist in arranging transportation to the hospital and will provide necessary information to the medical personnel about the patient’s condition.
IV. Prevention and Mosquito Control: - Preventive Measures:
- Use mosquito repellents containing DEET on exposed skin.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to minimise skin exposure. • If you notice anyone having the symptoms, notify the Welcome Centre. 2. Mosquito Control: The retreat management will ensure regular mosquito control
measures, such as fumigation and eliminating stagnant water sources where mosquitoes breed.
Dengue is a serious health concern, and early detection is vital for effective treatment. If you or anyone else experiences symptoms of dengue during the retreat, don’t delay getting tested and seek medical attention promptly. By following this protocol and taking immediate action, we can ensure the safety and well-being of all retreat participants.
Social Responsibility
As a corporate social responsible company, Samma Karuna has decided to:
● Never compete with traditional local businesses such as massages, Thai culture courses, laundry shops and motorbike rentals.
● Give work to as many local people as possible
● Give back to the local community as much as we can (e.g., Thai people have free access to yoga classes in the school).
In addition, the school organizes regular events to gather resources and money for the less fortunate. Samma Karuna is also concerned about the environment. To encourage students to use as little plastic as possible:
● We have two filtered water stations, one next to the restaurant and the other outside the toilet stalls, for anyone who wishes to refill their water bottle.
● We have several clearly-marked baskets around the school for recycling plastic bottles.
Promoting Change
Be close to the people who look for the answers but far away from those who already have found them. – Confucius
Samma Karuna is open to growth and learns from its students, karma yogis, teachers, staff and the general public through their valuable feedback, suggestions and ideas.
For this reason we follow a model of growth called “Continual Improvement Process” that requires constant re-evaluation of processes. We encourage you to let us know about anything you think we can do better.
That’s it! For any suggestions please talk to the Karma Yoga Leader or you may write them down and leave them at the suggestions box located at the entrance of the Welcome Center.
Enjoy your time at Samma Karuna!
May you be happy
